Tequila and Raicilla

by Rick Hepting

Recently I made a trip to Mascota, a small town in a high volcanic mountain valley in the State of Jalisco, Mexico, where I spent the good part of the day with the director of an agriculture school there, sharing information and dreams. Even tho neither of us spoke the other’s language, we communicated well because we shared a lot of the same training since we were both botanists. The language of science, as is the language of music and love, universal.

The school had a project growing the Raicilla Agave commercially since this is a well-known, though somewhat illegal profitable industry in the area.

Below are pictures of the various plants used in the creation of some of the popular agave drinks in the State of Jalisco (the home of tequila):

Agave salmiana, the source of Pulque
The Agave used for Pulque, a beer-like drink.

The Tequila Blue Agave
The well-known Tequila Blue Agave.

The lechuguilla
Agave Maximiliana, commonly known as “Pata de Mula” (Mules Foot) or lechuguilla is used to make the Mascota version of Raicilla”

The Agave (unidentified species) used to make the Tuito version of Raicilla
The Agave used to make Tuito Raicilla.

Each of these different plants impart different qualities to their respective products. The taste and strength also vary with the processing methods. If the agave piñas (the 10 year old agave plants with their leaves removed) are baked (as opposed to the commercial method of steaming), the flavor is often quite smokey. I had often heard that the Raicilla from Tuito and Mascota were different but didn’t know to what extent.

These drinks were all originally developed from wild species growing locally and the methods of production are basically the same for the different versions of Raicilla and Tequila: The mature piñas are roasted or steamed, the juice is extracted and then fermented and distilled.

Pulque is a simple fermented drink from the sap of the plant, skipping the distillation process. Raicilla, being basically the moonshine version of Tequila, is often of a very high proof unless you purchase one of the recently commercialized versions which are poor imitations of the original product.

A side benefit of this trip was finding a good Raicilla source in Mascota. This version is a smooth, strong drink that takes about a day to recover from if you drink too much (don’t ask me how I know this).

Race Relations » Local Author Book Signing, August 29

YELAPA AUTHOR, ROBERT HARDIN, TO SIGN NEW NOVEL

Yelapa author Robert Hardin announces a book signing of Race Relations, the latest novel in his popular David Armstrong series.

Race Relation
The event will be held at Café Roma in Puerto Vallarta from two to five p.m. on Saturday, August 29th. Café Roma fronts the Rio Cuale at 287 Encino just a few doors west of the municipal flea market.

In Race Relations, criminal attorney David Armstrong returns from an involuntary two year hiatus from practicing law and takes on the defense of a white Los Angeles police officer who is being retried after an appeals court reversed his conviction for murdering an unarmed teenaged black gang member.

In David’s first interview with the officer he asks him why he shot the teenager fourteen times and the officer says, “Because my Glock only held fourteen bullets.”

The case causes a conflict with David’s long-time lover, Felicia Bates-Baxter, California’s senior U.S. Senator, who publicly accused the police officer of being a brutal and racist cop during the first trial. David also has to contend with county prosecutors so hell-bent on sending the officer back to prison they flagrantly violate his constitutional rights. Like all the David Armstrong novels, the drama is played out in the courtroom.

Former northern California residents Robert Hardin and his wife, Kathryn, along with their two black cats, live year round in a beach house in Yelapa, a small village south of Puerto Vallarta and accessible only by boat. Race Relations is Hardin’s fifth novel since moving to Yelapa in January 2005.

All of Hardin’s books, including Race Relations, are available at amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles, and other bookstores in the U.S. and Canada. And they are available in Puerto Vallarta at NV Bookstore in the Paradise Plaza Shopping Center north of the city, at A Page in the Sun at 399 Olas Altas, and at Biblioteca Los Mangos at 1001 Avenue Francisco Villa.

Anyone wishing to know more about the author may access his author page on amazon.com or email him at croberthardin (at) gmail.com.

2009 Rosh HaShana

At sundown on September 18th, we mark the dawn of the Jewish New Year. Rosh HaShana is a wonderful time to consider where we have been and where we are going in this new year. It is a time for reflection and hope. I can think of no better way to celebrate this date than by sharing a table with our friends. 2009 has been a tough year for those of us in Puerto Vallarta. But the time has come to celebrate and anticipate the successes of the new year.

On September 19th, we will share challah and apples and honey. Allyna Vineberg has generously offered to host this event in her beautiful condo which overlooks the Bay. We will share matzoh ball soup, gefilte fish, homemade challah, dates, beets and leeks as well as a main course of Roasted Chicken with a Pomegranate Glaze.

The event is limited to 25 individuals. Reservations and prepayment are required to ensure participation. To book for this wonderful holiday, please contact Seth at seth (at) FoodbySeth.com or by calling 322 131-8808. The cost of the evening will be $350 pesos and includes all food and wine. As many of the ingredients are being ordered from Mexico City, reservations must be made by September 8th.

KEEP THE CHANGE! » ¡REDONDEO! Becas Vallarta Benefits from OXXO

KEEP THE CHANGE!

—By Polly G. Vicars

A recent television commercial for a telephone service depicts a customer with a cashier telling him to keep the change as there is nothing he can do with 2 cents. The clerk tells him that he will take the 2 cents as he can call his brother in Argentina for that.

Well, all over Puerto Vallarta similar events are taking place in the local Oxxo stores. What is happening here is that Tiendas OXXO has made a commitment to local charities to ask clients to redondeo (round up, their purchases.) If their bill is $20.45 pesos, they should ask the store to redondeo and the extra 55 centavos will go to a local charity.

Last week Becas Vallarta President Mariel de Fregoso, Irene and Carl Johnson and I attended an event at the Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza, A. C. (RISE) where Mother Mary and the children received a check for $216,653.20 pesos representing three months of rounding up in the Tiendas Oxxo in the Puerto Vallarta area.

WOW! That is a lot of rounding up!

What an impressive event! The Oxxo managers who raised the most money were awarded certificates of achievement and several gifts from the Refugio and from Oxxo. A huge cake and soft drinks were shared with the more than 50 children receiving a home there and their guests. Songs were sung, smiles were brilliant and thanks were given.

Five of the young people from the Refugio, Lucía, Carmen, María, Aracely and Carlos, are Becas Vallarta scholarship students. They, along with “Mama” Sol Martinez Maciel, welcomed us and made us feel very much a part of the proceedings. We are so proud to help these bright young people who, despite almost overwhelming odds, are a shining example to the younger children, a tribute to the Refugio’s excellence and well on their way to becoming productive citizens of the community.

At the end of the program Oxxo announced that it changes charities every three months and that during August, September and October all the proceeds from the redondeo will go to our Becas Vallarta, A.C. to help provide scholarships to young Vallartenses of great ability and small economic resources. When you are paying for your purchases at Oxxo be sure to prompt the clerk to round up and know that you are a part of a great effort to see that all bright young students in our area get the education they desire and deserve, regardless of their economic situation!

The word is ¡REDONDEO!

Cut out the flyer below to show to the cashier every time you shop at one of our many OXXOS and remember, just say Redondeo!
