Frida

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Bar Frida is an established neighborhood gay bar on the outskirts of the tourist zone. There are two floors that are usually packed on popular nights. The drink prices are more than reasonable and the food is basic and inexpensive, mostly the type of food (sandwiches, snacks, nachos…) you would want in a neighborhood pub or bar.

This is the closest thing in Vallarta to the TV bar, “Cheers.” It’s gay-owned but straight-friendly with a largely older clientele, a broad mixture of the National, tourist and expat communities. Very comfortable and lively.

COMMENTS ( from reviewers ):

“Gay bar that is very welcoming to anyone regardless of age, sexual orientation or nationality. Great jukebox! Friendly owners. Friendly customers. Food is good too.”

“Mexican cantina style. Very friendly, good food.”

COMMENTS ( from the owners )

Bar Frida, open since 2001 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico’s, Southside or Zona Romantica is a typical Mexican “alternative” cantina decorated in honor of Frida Kahlo with many paintings and memorabilia. We are a unique bar where everyone is welcome.

Our jukebox has a large selection of English and Mexican music with hundreds of videos and often people sing along with the songs. We have a neighborhood atmosphere, lots of character(s), a bar that once you’ve been to it, you’ll definitely want to go back.

Andale

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Andale is a Puerto Vallarta landmark, having just celebrated its 30th anniversary. In the day light it is a mild-mannered moderately-priced tourist restaurant with all the standard Vallarta breakfast and lunch fares.

But at night it becomes one the most active straight bars in town and certainly on Olas Altas, the main South Side beach street. Pure Party. The music is loud, 60s to 70s rock. The booze flows heavily and the place is generally packed with happy, dancing, drinking people, usually in the age range of 30 and up, with some locals but mostly tourists.

For those who simply want a nice meal, there are two restaurant floors above the bar. You will soon learn about the burro, Alice and Pussy if you spend any amount of time at night in Andale.

COMMENTS (from the owners )

Looking for some real Mexican fun in Puerto Vallarta? Then Andale is the place for you! Lively music, delicious food, ice cold Margaritas made from the finest tequila & an electric party atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re at the biggest fiesta in town!

We are open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, lazy afternoons and lively evenings, so whether you’re out shopping, meeting friends, returning from the beach or planning a party, it’s the only place to be!

At our prime Zona Romantica location on Olas Altas, tuck into our famous sizzling fajitas, served with flour tortillas and the essentials; salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Rip open a rack of ribs, smothered in barbecue sauce. Put some fire in your belly with our spicy chili or fill it up with a succulent burgers with tasty toppings, fresh salads and decadent desserts.

Andale’s choice of cocktails is so extensive it almost embarrassing. If you like your drinks sweet or sour, sharp or soft, we’ll have a cocktail to suit your taste and fuel your party spirit. And if it’s a drop of the Mexican holy water you’re looking for then look no further than Andale’s bar; tequila is our thing!

Cafe Roma

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

“Fox,” the Canadian owner of Cafe Roma, is a strange man but his bar/restaurant is quite a normal, friendly, welcoming sort of bar. Cafe Roma is not really a “sports bar” as its sign declares. It is much more. Inexpensive Italian food (pizza, lasagna, etc) is its superficial offering with a bar atmosphere centered on live entertainment as its backbone. Probably the best karaoke in town, since Fox knows how to cultivate talent. The owner is known for his high pressure solicitation of donations to a local Christian children’s charity (just a heads up).

Roma is up 3 flights of stairs but it’s worth the climb. If you can make it up to the open-air bar, you can relax and just plain enjoy Vallarta, or at the least, a Canadian version of it.

Clean with great prices.” “got a free shot of Tequila (it was during the Swine Flu outbreak and he was trying to keep his guests healthy!!)”

Cheeky Monkey

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Cheeky Monkey is in a prime location on the Malecon and stands out from its pricey neighbors by offering $1 (US) beer and margaritas. The bar is on the third floor above the restaurant on the second floor. The view, especially at sunset, is spectacular. People watching is a specialty. The food is good and moderately priced but don’t expect gourmet dinning here. It can be difficult to get a seat in the Cheeky Monkey at some times (like at sunset) because it is so (deservedly) popular. This is a wonderful, inexpensive bar in the middle of all the action.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • ADDRESS: 556 Paseo Diaz Ordaz at Calle Corona, upstairs

Que?Pasa

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Que?Pasa is a very popular, old expat bar that has gone through several incarnations here in Vallarta. It now is a large, comfortable bar on a very back street, probably the bar in this guide that is the most removed, geographically, from tourist Vallarta. It can be difficult to find for newcomers. It is in a Mexican residential neighborhood, definitely off the beaten path (not to worry, it is “safe”). It is on the R-04 Paso Ancho bus line and taxis are readily available. If you drive there you can usually find street parking within a block of the bar.

Live music (generally classic rock) is featured 3 nights a week and you will never find a shortage of expats to talk to or drink with. It has a full kitchen and serves a different special each day.

INFORMATION

  • ADDRESS: Aquiles Serdan # 625, Colonia Emiliano Zapata
  • WEBSITE: quepasapv.com
  • EMAIL: qpmlh @ hotmail.com
  • HOURS/DAYS: Every day 11 am to 2 pm

Que?Pasa’s Policy Statement:

Que?Pasa, a bar of our own, serving the Vallarta community since 2004, is owned and operated by long-time Vallarta residents Tom Schmitt and Michael Hayes. Que?Pasa’s mission is to provide the local resident an alternative to the glitter, hype, and prices of the tourist establishments.

Que?Pasa belongs to you the customer; those people who think of Vallarta as more than a vacation destination. We listen to what our customers want in a bar and a restaurant. The result is a meeting place that incorporates the natural, relaxing outside patio dining with an area protected from the sun and rain. We provide great food made only with the freshest ingredients at an affordable price. We are committed to bringing you the best of the local music scene with a different live band four nights a week and plenty of room for dancing or just sitting back and relaxing in Vallarta’s starlit evening.

Every Friday we give venue to the non-professional musicians among us with an open mic where you can play your instrument alone or jam with other locals. We provide regular pool tournaments, dart competitions and lots of games. For Sports or movies we have big screen High Definition TVs. We have a lending library at no cost to our customer of both books and movies regularly renewed with different titles. We always have specials – lots of specials on both food and drinks. At Que?Pasa we celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, or just another great day in paradise.
