4th Wixarika Festival Indígena 2009 » March 1 to 15

4th Festival Indígena 2009

In a joint participation of the City of Puerto Vallarta, DIF, the Comisión Nacional de Pueblos Indígenas and la Comunidad Wixarika, the 4th Festival Indígena 2009 will be held from 1 to March 15 in this Puerto Vallarta.

In this Festival, the Wixaritari culture will be demonstrated with a program that includes traditional crafts and music, ritual songs and dances, traditional ceremonies such as Patsixa (Change of authorities), Hikuri Neixa (Peyote Fiesta) and Tatei Neixa (Drum Festival), with photo exhibitions, workshops for children and the presence of the storyteller Araceli Muñoz. All events and demonstrations are open to the public and free.

To be honest, this is not much more than a half dozen Huichol artisans selling their work. The “performances” are not announced in advance so it’s pot luck…. They are nice people and are quite willing to talk about ‘secret’ herbs and such, and, in opposition to previous shows, they now like photographs taken of them.

The main exhibition will take place in Plaza Caracol from 10 am to 9 pm everyday from March 1 to March 15. Extensions of this festival will also occur at the Cuale Cultural Center.

VII Campeonato Nacional Charro » February 18 to 22, 2009

The Puerto Vallarta yearly traditional Championship Mexican Charreada (Rodeo) will be held February 18 to 22, 2009. If you like charros (cowboys) and horses and pageantry, this is a very exciting event.

THE MALECONEADA:

A special highlight open to everyone without charge will be on Friday, February 20, at 10 pm, the traditional Maleconeada, a promenade on the Malecón with many Charros, chicas, walking bands and free tequila being passed out to all those attending. The Maleconeada begins late in the evening and continues on until it’s over. It starts at the north end of the Malecón at Park Hidalgo and proceeds down to the Presidencia where it ends with a public dance. The march is slow and the people are “happy” and loose.
