RHYTHM & BLUES on the BEACH :: CyCs :: RON THOMPSON :: Oct 16

by Steve York

If you like blues, vintage R&B and good old rock & roll, don’t miss this show at CyCs!

ronthompson_slide_sml.jpgThe Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise will make a stop in Vallarta October 16. On board is a stellar line up of Blues and R&B talent including my friend Ron Thompson from Oakland, California. I toured in the US Midwest with Ron each year from1989 to 1992, then again July to August 2006, and May to June this year.

When Ron was booked for the cruise he asked me to set up a show for us in Vallarta. The show will be at Cuates y Cuetes, on the Los Muertos Beach, in Old Town, Puerto Vallarta, 4pm to 6pm(plus) Tuesday October 16th.

In addition to Ron and myself there will be a drummer from the cruise and we may be joined by other mutual friends from the performers on the cruise. Ron is a multi instrumentalist playing guitar, piano & harmonica.

Please take a look at Ron’s website http://www.rtblues.com. Ron is one of the finest artists on the US blues circuit with a vast knowledge of the music. He is also a dynamic performer who always has the audience on their feet!

There’s also a video of us and more music and video on Ron’s website.

“Look, I got problems just like everybody else. I try to forget my problems when I play my music, and I try to create for the audience a way for them to forget their problems too. I try to get the people into the spirit. The blues is a spiritual thing. When I’m on stage I go into a trance.”

LATIN JAZZ :: Martin Montenegro at CyCs :: Sept 12

Saxophonist Martin Montenegro is making a rare public appearance at Cuates y Cuetes Cuates y Cuetes Wednesday night from 8 pm to 11 pm. With him will be Paco Barajas (guitar), Miguel Salazar (congas) and Steve York on bass. Come early – stay late!

MOENIA :: Friday, June 29 :: Club Christine

When thinking of Latin Techno-Pop, the first name that comes to mind is MOENIA. The group is comprised of Alfonso Pichardo, keyboardist Jorge Soto and keyboardist/programmer Alexander “Midi” Ortega.

Often compared to New Order, Erasure, OMD, The Cure, and Depeche Mode, MOENIA is popular within the Latin club scene while simultaneously pioneering a darker, more experimental and poetic side of Spanish-language electronica.

LIVE JAZZ at the new CHEZ SABOR

Live jazz at Chez Sabor

After a face lift, new management, new menu, chef and staff, Chez Sabor is open with weekly live jazz and salsa Friday-Saturday-Sunday nights from 9-12pm. This weekend (June 15-17), featuring guitarist Paco Barajas’s trio. Free internet.

Club Sabor is located at Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez 128, near Banorte Bank, just off the malecon.

Contact Andrew Robertson 322 222-5660 or (cell) 044 322 140 7447.

SPECIAL EVENTS May 31, June 1

Entertainment-wise, this is a very active week in Vallarta. Besides these events, Thursday will host the Mariachi Gala at the Malecon. The street (from the top of the Malecon to Libertad) will be closed to vehicle traffic from about 4 pm on. The main concert will begin around 9 pm with a fireworks display at around midnight.

These two new postings are from Tom Colvin, via a Steve York’s Yahoo Music Forum:

3 Grand Dames of Song — special performance at Mariachi Loco

Mariachi Loco, the music club on I. Vallarta in Southside, presents three well-known “grand dames” singers this Friday night. Performing will be Lucero del Campo, who I think may be a female impersonator, is known as “La Reina del Falsete.” Also performing at Gloria Armida and Amparo Rodriguez. Expect high-spirited Mexican mariachi and ranchero music.

End of season concert at Lienzo Charro La Ribera in Pitillal

Few expats know about, much less attend the frequent music nights at the La Ribera grounds in Pitillal. These events, staged in a horse rink stadium, are immensely popular with the local Mexican population. This Saturday will be the last concert for awhile, as the stadium closes down for the rainy season

Featured will be Los Tucanes de Tijuana. Also performing will be Vaquero’s Musical and Astilleros. These events are fun, but it is recommended that you find a local resident to accompany you.
