R-Bar

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

R-Bar is new as of this review, open for only a couple of weeks so nothing written here will apply by the time you read it. The bar is sparse with only a small bar and a colorful jukebox and a dozen or so wooden tables. The beer here is Sol/Indio, typical of cheaper bars in this area. The drinks are fair-priced and strong (25 pesos for mixed drinks or margaritas). 15 pesos for cerveza.

There is no air conditioning and, at the time of this writing, no ceiling fans. The bathrooms, tho small, don’t have lights so you have to rely on ambient luz. The owner, Roberto, is friendly, energetic and speaks English well. I have a hard time figuring out what this bar will morph into but it certainly does need to morph.

The logo on the sign out front is a balero (in rainbow colors). This is a popular Mexican toy where a ball on a string is swung into a cup. There must be some type of symbolism here.

Encuentros Pizza Bar Lounge

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Encuentros Pizza Bar Lounge is quite a relaxed bar that just happens to serve pizza. Or is it a pizza restaurant that is also a fine bar? I guess it doesn’t matter.

The atmosphere here is exquisite with subdued lighting and very, very comfortable, quality furnishings. The pizzas are individually sized (4×12″) and are finely crafted at modest prices (60-90 pesos each). The drink selection is great and the prices are moderate (or downright low at happy hour). This is a nice place for a date or a meeting.

Callidad de Vida Hospice Fundraiser » April 18 at Casa Isabel

calidad de vida fundraiser

Calidad de Vida, a Hospice and Palliative Care agency is opening in Banderas Bay. This is a bilingual, multi-cultural nonprofit agency that will provide care in the home, to all people living on the Bay of Banderas who have a life threatening illness without regard to their ability to pay for these services. Calidad de Vida will provide comprehensive Hospice and Palliative Care services from Mismaloya to La Penita. The Hospice and Palliative Care services will be equal in quality to the care provided in countries like the USA and Canada. The agency is committed to assuring the highest quality of living possible for patients and their families.

Hospice is an international movement. People worldwide are committed to seeing that all individuals have access to services that allow death with dignity and limiting spiritual, emotional and physical pain. Symptoms and pain can be managed with the skills and medications now available.

The current members of the Calidad de Vida Board include 3 Mexican citizens, 2 U.S. citizens and 1 citizen of New Zealand. All live year round in the Bay area and have experience in Hospice, providing Medical Care and Palliative Services.

The Board of Directors includes Dra. Maria Cuevas, an Internist and Oncology Specialist who is the Medical Director and practices Medicine in Puerto Vallarta; Dra. Adi Dominguez is a Psychiatrist with a practice in Puerto Vallarta; Lisa Ozzello, RN, is the Director of the agency and has extensive experience in managing both Home Health Care agencies and Hospice agencies in the United States; Karla Herrera Sepulveda is an attorney with a practice in Bucerias and specializes in Corporate law; Eleanor Hawthorn is a Pharmacist and has worked with Hospice in New Zealand for more than 20 years and John Ozzello has over 25 years of experience in the management of nonprofit agencies.

The Board is actively recruiting additional members for the Board who are committed to bringing Hospice services to the Puerto Vallarta area. If you are interested in serving on the Board please contact John Ozzello at (329)298-6264 or cellular at 322-141-3255 or email at jolo1721@live.com. We especially need people with financial, legal, public relations and fundraising experience.

Opening a Hospice agency is a daunting task which cannot be accomplished without the support of the entire Banderas Bay community. It will require education, outreach and fundraising and an active and committed group of volunteers. Calidad de Vida Hospice needs individuals with a passion for assuring that compassionate and professional care is available to all who have a life threatening illness. Individuals who have experienced hospice care are often the best spokespeople for the Hospice message, as they can share their personal experiences about the care and support their loved ones were provided. They may also have experienced the support, caring and guidance of the hospice staff for the entire family.

Calidad de Vida Hospice will have experienced hospice personnel on staff and will provide training for Mexican medical professionals to become skilled in palliative care, learning not only pain control, but symptom management and also bereavement support. So, please call and join us in this challenging effort to develop a new service and to offer new employment opportunities for local residents. If you wish to volunteer, donate, help, make suggestions or if you have questions, recommendations or would just like to talk with us about Hospice, please don’t hesitate to contact us at (329) 298-6264 or cellular at 322-116-6324.

Hospice in Vallarta » April 16

On April 16th, Calidad de Vida Hospice and Palliative Care will present an informational program on the state of Hospice and Palliative Care in Mexico in 2010. The program will be held at the International Friendship Center from 10 am until 11:30 am. The program is open to the public and free of charge.

Speakers will include Lee Carter, Chairperson of the San Miguel de Allende Hospice agency, the 1st In Home Hospice Care agency in Mexico. Lee will share the San Miguel Allende Hospice experience and provide information on the new Palliative Care law in Mexico which passed the Mexican Federal Legislature in 2009. Included in the new law are requirements for hospitals and doctors to provide patients with a terminal illness information on Palliative Care services that the patient may need when they return to their homes. Lee will also speak about the new law’s effect on End of Life Care Directives, increased access to pain control medications and access to bereavement counseling.

Joining Mr. Carter will be Dr. Roger Strong of the San Diego, California Hospice and member of the End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), and Trainer with the ELNEC Latin American Palliative Care Association. Dr. Strong will speak on the International Hospice movement and projects currently taking place throughout Latin America and South America.

Lisa Ozzello, RN, Director of Calidad de Vida Hospice and Palliative Care agency here in Puerto Vallarta will talk about Calidad de Vida Hospice services and community involvement in this new agency.

CALIDAD de VIDA is a new bi-lingual, multi-cultural non-profit agency that provides high-quality in-home care to all people living in and around Banderas Bay who have a life threatening illness. Rather than providing care in a foreign location, Calidad de Vida goes directly to the patients home and provides their services in familiar and comfortable surroundings.

We are committed to providing all individuals, regardless of race, gender or ability to pay, access to services that allow living and death with dignity by limiting spiritual, emotional and physical pain through continuous support and medication as needed. We also offer bereavement services to family members up to a year after a loved one has passed.

We are not a one-size-fits-all agency, rather we customize our in-home treatments based upon the needs of the individual and their family ensuring a personalized plan, through our team approach.

CALIDAD de VIDA, a recognized non-profit agency by the Mexican Government (as Bahia de Banderas Hospice AC), is managed by a dedicated group of physicians, psychologists and nurses and is devoted to the highest quality of living possible for patients and their families.

For additional information or to contact Calidad de Vida, please visit our website at www.bahiahomecare.com.

Recuerdos del Paraíso » Saturdays and Sundays in April

Recuerdos del Paraíso
Recuerdos del Paraíso, Memories of Paradise, a play, will take place every Saturday and Sunday of April at the Cuale Cultural Center Auditorium at 8 pm. In Spanish.

The entrance will cost 80 pesos.

In this story Carmen and Antonia will unveil their memories and surface landscapes and faces of other times as they carefully review a family album. Possibly we will recognize ourselves in their memories.

Mi Casa Es Tu Casa Festival » April 10

On April 10, 2010, Puerto Vallarta will celebrate the First Mi Casa es Tu Casa Festival. This event is being held to recognize and thank PV’s visitors and foreign community for their support of our local charitable organizations and the work they do to improve the lives of the less fortunate.

MI-CASA-ES-TU-CASA

At 6 pm in the Municipal Plaza, Puerto Vallarta Mayor Salvador Gonzales Resendiz will present awards to some of the outstanding foreign residents whose altruist work and service have made such a difference in the lives of so many in our community.

Each Banderas Bay area charity or non-profit organization is responsible for nominating a person they feel deserves recognition for going “above and beyond” in their efforts for their causes.

At 7 pm the celbration moves to Los Arcos Amphitheater on the Malecón, followed by cocktails and botanas in the Plaza Principal from 8 to 10 pm. Organized by Sra. Nelly Barquet with support from Municipal authorities, CANIRAC and local businesses, this is the first in what we hope will become a yearly event.

CANIRAC will be providing the botanas, but we are asking for the community’s support to make the Mi Casa es Tu Casa Festival as successful as possible. If you need more information, or would like to contribute to the success of this event, please call Sra. Nelly Barquet at (322) 294-1237 or Jhovanee at (322) 356-6028.
