A very special recital is being prepared to celebrate the double anniversary of our fair Puerto Vallarta, marking 89 years of being elevated to the category of municipality and 39 of being named city.
The Culture Department has been charged with the organization of the great recital on May 31. Vihuelas, guitars, guitarrones and trumpets will fill the center of town with notes of Mariachi music when three bands, The New Tecatitlan Mariachi, Los Toritos, and the Navidad Mariachi from Mascota get together to pay homage to the city and the municipality.
The grand concert is scheduled to begin at 9:00 pm on the last Thursday of the month, it is foreseen that it will go on for at least three hours, to the only purpose of celebrating the joy of this great fiesta, to which everybody is welcome.
On the beautiful stage of the Aquiles Serdan Amphitheater (Los Arcos Ampitheater), the three ambassadors of Mexican music will wish Puerto Vallarta a happy birthday.
The New Tecalitlan was formed in Guadalajara in 1965. Pepe Martínez Barajas and his brother Fernando hand-picked a remarkable group of talented musicians, and thanks to the sum of their individual talents and the brilliant leadership of Pepe Martínez soon took a solid position in the preferences of the audience and became one of the best mariachi bands in Mexico.
The current lineup was completed in the year 2000, the same year they became part of the International Mariachi and Charro Meeting in Guadalajara, where they taught workshops for national and foreign mariachi musicians attending the meeting.
Los Toritos, in turn, dresses up the celebration with the fame that precedes them. They are the recipient of the Mara de Oro Trophy in Venezuela, which is equivalent to being named the best mariachi in the world. They have toured the world extensively, and take pride in their rich discography.
Mariachi Navidad has been around for 35 years, and has produced four albums; among them Te Parto el Alma, Rescatando Nuestra Musica: Valses, Polkas y Marchas; (I’ll tear your soul, Rescuing our Music: Waltzes, Polkas and Marches.) Two of the original members of the band remain in it: Daniel Rubio López, trumpet player; and Domingo López Macedo; guitarron player.
After the concert, as it is already traditional, a great fireworks display will be presented, a climactic moment of the double celebration of Puerto Vallarta.
