2010 Vallarta Dia de los Muertes Festival

Along the street of the Municipal Mercado, Agustin Rodriguez, there will be traditional altars set up from October 31 to November 2. A Church fair will be installed selling antojitos. Large 2 meter catrinas will be available for tourists to take photos with. There will also be altars and Day of the Dead art exhibited on the Malecon and at the Presidencia.

On November 2, from 7 to 11 pm, there will be a celebration/fiesta for the Day of the Dead in downtown Puerto Vallarta.

There will be a mariachi show, a performance by the Xiutla Folkloric Ballet and fireworks.

CEMETERY VIGIL

On the night of November 1, relatives and friends of those who have died will spend the night in local cemeteries. The 5th of December cemetery is the main one visited locally. It is possible for tourists to visit the cemetery at this time, but extreme reverence is cautioned and expected. This is not a tourist activity but rather a personal and emotional family experience. There will also be a strong police presence regulating alcohol consumption.

8 Vallarta Hotels and the Presidencia will also have altar displays and there will be a contest with prizes (including stays in some of the hotels) for people who complete the altar circuit.

  • The Hotel Posada del Río will have an altar honoring the actrice Dolores del Río
  • The Hotel Rosita for don Miguel Hidalgo
  • The Hotel Rio for Mario Moreno Cantinflas
  • The Hotel Eloísa for Frida Kahlo
  • The Catedral for Francisco Villa
  • The Los Arcos for Emiliano Zapata
  • The Hotel del Mar for Guadalupe Sánchez
  • The Hotel Villa Mercedes for Porfirio Díaz.

This year, because of city budget restraints, the events will be sponsored by private interests.

VALLARTA ALTAR COMPETITION

The altars at the Presidencia are placed through a competition.

The competition for the altars of the dead remains open until October 28 and is open to all residents of Vallarta who are interested in participating. This event is meant to disseminate and enhance this Mexican tradition.

The works must express aesthetic values, traditions and customs. They must also be devoted mainly to family or friends and not contain elements alien to the tradition, both in concept and material (in other words, not be commercial or political). The altars will be placed on October 31 at 18 hrs and removed on November 3 early in the morning.

  • 10 am – Charros Parade (Traditional Cowboy Parade) starting at Cardenas Park and going up I. Vallarta, Av. Morelos and Av. México (downtown bus service will be disrupted).
  • 8 pm – Coronation of the Queen of the Fiestas Patrias in Ixtapa
  • 10 pm – Coronation of the Queen of the Fiestas Patrias in Las Juntas

SEPTEMBER 15

  • 9 am – Unveiling of the sculpture “La Victoria Del Bicentenario” by the Santa Maria Plaza, at the intersection of Fco. Medina Ascencio and the Libramiento
  • 9:30 am – Reunión Comunida Vallartense (meeting of the community of the Vallarta people) and the presentation of the National Anthem by the municipal chorus of Vallarta at the Presidencia Plaza
  • 10 pm – Presentation by the Municipal Chorus of Puerto Vallarta in front of the entrance to the Presidencia
  • 10:50 pm – Reading the “Arenga de Hidalgo” by Lic. José de Jesús Sánchez, Guerra-Secretario General de Gobierno, on the balcony of the Presidency
  • 11 pm – CEREMONIA DEL GRITO DE INDEPENDENCIA led by Lic. Salvador González Reséndiz, the mayor of Puerto Vallarta, from the balcony of the Presidencia
    • The National Anthem – sung by all the people and Municipal Chorus
    • Fireworks – At Los Arcos amphitheater.
    • Baile Popular – A street dance for the people of Vallarta at the Presidencia Plaza and the Malecón

SEPTEMBER 16

  • 8 am – Ceremony: Flag raising to full mast at the Presidencia Plaza
  • 8:30 am – Civic Ceremony at Park Hidalgo
  • 10 am – Military Parade starting at Cardenas Park and continuing up I. Vallarta, Morelos and Av. México (downtown bus service disrupted)

Gabriela Araujo Concert » September 2

A concert is presented with the actress Gabriela Araujo as part of the Bicentennial of Independence and the Centennial of the Revolution. She is accompanied by guitarist Raul de Anda Molina.

The event will take place on Thursday, September 2 at 8:15 pm in the theater of Hotel Friendly Hola Vallarta. The event is free and punctual attendance is recommended as a large audience is expected.

This event is presented as part of the 2010 celebrations of the Bicentennial of Independence and the Centennial of the Revolution.

Gabriela Araujo

It is an event sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the State of Jalisco, under the direction of Alejandro Cravioto.

This is a concert of the actress Gabriela Araujo, accompanied by the renowned Mexican guitarist Raúl Molina de Anda, titled “Canciones y pensamientos revolucionarios.”

The Program:

“Romancero Gitano,” by Federico García Lorca, “Hazme un campito, Gabriela” by the author and “Dueña del Universo” by various authors of the Spanish Golden Age plus contemporaries.

The program is in two acts and is a multidisciplinary concert performance, with singing, poetry and storytelling, all carried out by Gabriela Araujo and music by Raúl Molina de Anda.

This event is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the State of Jalisco, with the participation of Eventos Culturales La Petite France and the Arts and Culture Branch of the municipality

ORGULLO-POR-JALISCO

Grupo Folclórico Vallarta Azteca of CUC, Centro Universitario de la Costa, will be presented on Sunday May 30th at noon at Teatro Vallarta, to raise funds for the purchase of clothing for its next program Bicentennial.

The cost of tickets is:

  • 150 pesos general seating
  • 220 pesos VIP zone

The program will be two hours. In the first part there will be dances from various states: Danza del venado (Sonora) and the sounds of Sinaloa, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan, Nayarit. The second part presents a cultural journey through the beautiful past of Jalisco, accompanied by the Mariachi Tierra Jalisco.

This is a great opportunity to meet and support the Theatre Vallarta. This group has shown great quality and a strong commitment to preserve the intangible heritage of Mexico through dance.
