“At the workshop there is no strict academic pretension and, on the contrary, we have the slogan of giving freedom to discover each individual’s own taste for drawing,” said Ireri Topete, a teacher of the workshop, who also noted that the form of teaching is based on Betty Edwards School, where the students draw live models.

This exhibition covers the work of the last 6 months at the Cuale Cultural Center. The exhibition opens WednesdayJanuary 7 at 7 pm and runs until January 17, from 9 am to 9 pm in the Bernice Stars Room at the Los Mangos Library.

Exhibited will be the work of Barbara Drucker, Barbara Mandel, Amparo Topete, Margot Mcghan, Mark Zeller, Gregorio Mendoza, Liljana Yashruti, Lourdes Merino, Irma Dichirico, Lola Deziel, Samantha Salgado and Zina Sirutis.

Pat HenryThe Pat Henry Studio has announced a series of Open Studio Evenings, and Friday, January 9, marks the first event for the 2009 season. Henry will welcome visitors to see her new direction in painting as well as a series of monotypes from 6:00 PM until 9:30 PM at Jacarandas 183 in the Zona Romantica.

Henry has been a well-known member of the permanent expat community of Puerto Vallarta ever since she arrived alone on her sailboat more than eleven years ago at the end of a solo around-the-world adventure. She financed that voyage with colorful, highly detailed watercolors of the ports where she stopped along her 40,000 mile voyage.

Puerto Vallarta Street PaintingHistory

Street painting has a long tradition in cities in Western Europe and probably started in Italy in the 16th century. The artists who use chalk to draw on the street are known as “madonnari” or “Madonna painters” because they reproduced icons of the Madonna, (our lady). The works are traditionally called street paintings, rather than chalk drawings or sidewalk art, because when well executed they can resemble paintings. The artists would travel from town to town and create street paintings for traditional religious and folk festivals. These artists lived (and still live) from the coins thrown onto their work in appreciation for the image and the artist’s skill.
