Get to know the costumes culture and traditions of expats living in Puerto Vallarta by going to one of the following bars.

I assume that this is somewhat of a joke, but it’s an admirable joke:

Becas Breakfast » River Cafe, December 10

The River Café to Host December Becas Breakfast December 10 at 9:30 am.

by Polly G. Vicars

Evangelina Sánchez and her husband Margarito Larios, proprietors of the beautiful River Café, located in the Old Vallarta area where the two branches of the Río Cuale encircle the land known as the Río Cuale Island, are hosting the second Becas Breakfast of the season on Wednesday, December 10 beginning at 9:30 am.

Evangelina Sánchez and Margarito LariosEva and Margarito, are not only known for their high quality cuisine and the excellence of their wait staff, but for their generous contributions to the community of Puerto Vallarta and its environs. There is hardly an event staged that is not partly sponsored by these two indefatigable workers for the betterment of the people of this area.

A quick, “Por Supuesto” (of course) was their answer when asked to host the Becas Breakfast. They are planning a delicious breakfast of coffee or tea, sweet breads made in house, fresh squeezed orange juice and the choice of Chilaquiles, Omelets with cheese and mushrooms or Shrimp Crepes. Doesn’t that make you hungry just reading about it?

During the breakfast, Becas supporters will sell raffle tickets to the diners for incredible prizes donated by outstanding businesses, artisans and artists, including prizes from Andale, Archi’s Wok, bANANaCANtiNA, BarrioSur, Botanical Gardens, Café Catedral, Casa Isabel, Cassandra Shaw Jewelry, Coco’s Kitchen-Barrio Sur, Daiquiri Dick’s, June Rosen Lopez Jewelry, La Piazetta Ristorante, La Palapa, Lucy’s CuCu Cabaña, Marcelo Mico Pilates, Memo’s The Pancake House, Ocean Friendly Tours, Primivera Nursery, River Café, Tonys Please, Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates and more to be announced.

Bring your checkbooks for the silent auction featuring original paintings by two internationally acclaimed artists from Mexico, Federico de la Vega and Jesús “Tellosa” Botello Sanchez.

BecadosWhile you are having a fabulous breakfast, perhaps winning a valuable prize or adding an outstanding painting to your collection, you will be helping to insure that Vallarta’s bright, but economically challenged young people will be able to get the education they deserve. Remember, Becas is funding the junior high, senior high and university educations of almost 300 students and with your help we can continue to add to that number. Find out more about this fabulous organization at AmericaMexicoFoundation.com.

You can buy your $150 peso tickets from any Becas member or by calling me at (322) 223-1371 or writing me at phvicars (at) gmail.com. Last month’s breakfast at Coco’s Kitchen-BarrioSur was a complete sellout – so don’t wait until the last minute to buy yours. You won’t want to miss this event of friendship and good eating! See you there?

Blu’s Block Party » November 29

I love street parties in Puerto Vallarta and this one is probably going to top my list of the most memorable. What can you say? If this block party doesn’t blow the bloomers off of Vallarta, nothing can. Blu’s Salon is celebrating the beginning of its 4th year in business here in Vallarta with this modest approach to street partying.

(from Blu’s own words – never mind that he speaks of himself in the third…):

So here’s the deal. When blu throws a party, we tend to go over the top. I mean what’s the point of inviting 300 of your friends to close down Olas Altas, if you’re not going to give them something to talk about for a long, long time … right?

Well blu is in a party mood again, and when that happens, you need to be ready for anything. Saturday, November 29, 2008, is the night to put in your calendar now. On this particular night, there will only be one place to be from 8 till 10 pm. And that’s on the sidewalks and in the street in front of blu, the five star salon and spa, at Olas Altas 513. This party is free and open to the public. What a great way to start off the season – with free blu Mojitos, free blu Margaritas and free red and white wine.

But wait! That’s not all. No siree. blu is also ready to show off a little … with fashion, hair, jewelry, fashion and – oh yeah – more hair. At exactly 9 pm, we’ll have a fabulous fashion show. Each stylist will have their own models upon whom they will have worked their own form of magic. And, let me tell you, from the designs I’ve seen, they will all be a sight to behold.

Learning from our first fashion show, this year we’ll have a raised runway behind the curbside fencing in front of the salon, so everybody can see from anywhere – complete with special lighting, music and even a smoke machine! You’ll see it all: from what you can wear on the streets of Vallarta to what the runways in Europe are showing us. It will all will be revealed at the Phase 4 Begins Now party and fashion show.

It’s show time, and blu is geared up and ready to show off a little. With local merchants helping with dresses and jewelry and blu taking care of the rest … I guarantee you a good time will be had by all. And you never know, you may have more fun than you expected, and you may see a little more than you thought you would. Is that a big enough tease for you?

The fashion show – complete with raised, underlit, plexiglass runway – begins promptly at 9:00 pm. It’s Phase 4 Begins Now. 4 years of Fabulous. It will be like no other Anniversary Party ever on Olas Altas. Come see what it’s like to be drenched in len’s life!

Biblioteca de La Higuera Annual Fundraiser

Very Sadly, Sally Conely died of a heart attack this morning, December 1, 2008. She will be dearly missed.

Biblioteca de La Higuera Annual Fundraiser
Calle Hidalgo #256 – El Pitillal
Monday, November 24, 2008, 6pm to 9pm

Tickets: 250 pesos includes two drinks (wine or soft drinks), food plate, two raffle tickets (and we have some fabulous raffle prizes!)
Music by D’Rachel

Yes! It’s that time of year again – the event that “kicks off” the high season as we gather to raise funds for Sally Conley’s little library in El Pitillal. Sally’s life has been dedicated to books, reading and teaching these joys to children.

Tucked away behind a giant higuera (rubber) tree, once you enter this magical world filled with pint-sized chairs, colorful paintings and craftworks made by the kids, you are immediately whisked back to your childhood days of finding that very special book in the library and entering your own private world.

Keeping the library up, running and growing is an ongoing financial struggle. This is the 4th annual fundraiser with all previous events being a great success with lots of fun and surprises!
As last year, we will have resplendent gift baskets for sale for your holiday shopping needs, economically priced and filled with amazing goodies!

Gone To The Dogs
by Laura Gelezunas, Video Diva Productions

The restaurant Daiquiri Dick’s is going to the dogs. It’s time to grab your best friend and head to the Pet Picnic.

Bill Kelly
The third annual Pet Picnic will be a howling good time on Saturday, December 6 starting at 11AM on the restaurant’s patio overlooking Los Muertos beach. Enjoy a gourmet, boxed lunch and there will be a special doggie bag for your pal.

ayuda animalesLast year over 70 made an appearance at this fun-filled event. This year proceeds go to Ayuda a los Animales, Help The Animals, part of the PEACE non-profit association. They are responsible for the high volume spay and neuter clinics in Nayarit and now, Jalisco.

“It’s an amazing event,” says Bill Kelly, Dog Lover, “I came spontaneously the first year and have been hooked ever since, I always have a great time, win prizes and had a super lunch. I really look forward to this party every year.”

Miss Ellen and GigiAudience participation is encouraged for the Best Costume and Best Trained contests. This year check out the latest in dog fashions starting at 11:45, followed by the Best Dressed competition at 12:00, and the Best Trained dog rounding out the show at 12:15. Don’t be late if you want to participate.

There’s going to be a raffle with all kinds of great items and door prizes, too. This is also a great chance to meet other animal lovers and learn how you can help in the plight of local dogs and cats.

Tickets are $225 in advance and $275 at the door. You can purchase them at Daiquiri Dick’s Restaurant or The Deli. Space is limited, so get your tickets early. It promises to be another tale wagging event.
