This New Year’s Evening Performance at the River Cafe here in Puerto Vallarta will most likely be one of Willie & Lobo’s final performances together. There are no more tours planned for next year and the two are reportedly breaking up. Word on the street is that Lobo (Wolfgang Fink) already is putting together a new band.

12 Uvas » A Mexican New Years Tradition
Everyone here in Puerto Vallarta eats 12 grapes during the 12 strokes of the midnight bells….
This is an old Spanish tradition dating back to 1909. In December of that year, some Alicantese vine growers came up with the idea to better sell huge amounts of grapes left over from an excellent harvest.
The tradition consists of eating a grape with each bell strike at midnight at New Years, December 31. If you’re a fast thinker, a wish may be made with each grape.
According to the tradition, eating these grapes leads to a year of prosperity and people always need hope at celebrations, especially one marking the end of one era, however ephemeral, and the beginning of another.
Typically, grocery stores double the price of uvas the week before New Years.

Celebrate New Years 2008 on the Malecón at the official Puerto Vallarta New Years Celebration with Banda Caña Brava from 10:30 until Midnight when all hell breaks loose and the skies over Vallarta are filled with an amazing display of fireworks coming from all corners of the City and up and down the Bay.
The band will be at the Seahorse Sculpture. The street will be closed. There will be thousands of people dancing and drinking and having a good time. If you have to divide Puerto Vallarta New Years between the gringo version and the Mexican version, this is the place to be for the Mexican version. It is extremely lively, my favorite venue.
Many of the restaurants downtown will offer special dinners.
HINT: It will almost be impossible to get a taxi after midnight. The streets will be too crowded and the drivers will be partying.
POSTSCRIPT:
The fireworks display for this 2008 New Years lasted for over 20 minutes, one of the longest, largest displays that this city has seen.
