UPDATE: With recent city administration change here, only Miguel and Dulce remain in this office. According to reports, the volunteer program will continue.
For the new tourist or the established expat, the Puerto Vallarta Office of Tourism (Dirección de Turismo) offers a wealth of information, both directly from the very friendly bilingual staff and from the racks of free maps, printed advertisements and brochures.
All of the local English language magazines and newspapers – Bay Vallarta, The PV Mirror, The Tribune and Vallarta Today – are available in this office, although some are often in short supply because of the high demand (hint: go in on Tuesdays for the best selection).

The atmosphere of the Vallarta Tourism Office is relaxed, friendly, informal and efficient. It is centrally located between the Los Arcos Amphitheater at the southern end of the Malecon and the famous Vallarta Cathedral, La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, two of the major landmarks in Vallarta’s Centro district.
Maps and posters of local attractions and upcoming events cover the walls of this small 5 desk office. The hours are 8 am to 8 pm Monday thru Saturday and 10 am to 6 pm on Sundays. For the weary traveler, the building, known as the Presidencia because it currently also houses many of the other city government offices, including that of the mayor, offers clean, convenient and free bathrooms.
The office is, of course, wheelchair accessible. It is located at Independencia #123 in Colonia Centro, at the corner of Independencia and Juarez, just off of the public square. The office exterior is inconspicuous and is marked only by a sign that says, Dirección de Turismo. It is readily accessed from virtuslly all of the city’s bus routes.
Recently the Director de Turismo, José Luis Díaz Borioli, instituted a program in which American and Canadian resident expats are volunteering to work 3 hour shifts one or two days a week to present a more tourist-based viewpoint to English speaking visitors. Information on this program may be obtained by emailing info@learnvallarta.com.

Puerto Vallarta now has 2 farmers markets, or, should I say, the old market has split into two. They both are on Saturday, and run from 10 am to 2 pm. The “old” farmers market has moved to Pino Suerez between Carranza and Basilio Badillo and the “new” farmers market is in the location of the “old” market, at the Paradise Community Center on Pulpito, across from Coco’s Restaurant.
A little confusing, no?
Apparently there is a bit of dissent amongst the market vendors. This can happen when you assemble a large group of very individualistic entrepreneurs. One major difference between the two markets is that the “new” market is a cooperative of the vendors and the “old” market is a private business.
The list of vendors at the “new” market is impressive. Many of them are the cream of the crop of the “old” market last year.
Here is a sampling of the new Market Co-op at the Paradise Community Center:

Saturday Market Co-op Press Release
The new Saturday Market Co-op is at the Paradise Community Center, 127 Pulpito (across from Coco’s Restaurant) in Colonia Emiliano Zapata, on Saturday, November 5th.
Every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm browse your favorite market vendors for freshly baked breads, quality organic vegetables, authentic English pies, prepared-fresh Thai dishes, gourmet chili, gorgeous flowers and so much more. Many favorite and familiar market vendors will be offering their services and products: The Artesian Bakery, Mavi Graf’s Arts Culinario, Flowers-To-Go, Mark’s Leek & Thistle Pie Company, Narisa’s Thai Kitchen, Krystal Frost’s Organic-Select, Liana’s Paradise Bakery Cinnamon Rolls and Sid’s World Famous Chili will all be there. Expect to see lots of fresh new faces.
Sit and relax in the shade while you enjoy a light breakfast of freshly baked pastries, a breakfast burrito or a fresh baked breakfast pizza, with coffee or tea. Or have a delicious lunch of authentic Thai specialties from Narisa’s kitchen, hotdogs and sausages or fresh made personal pizza plus other exciting new offerings. Take home the best bread, pastries, pies and chili in town, or some of Don’s homemade soups, hot and ready for lunch or frozen for your take-home convenience. So many great choices…come hungry and enjoy!
There are now two markets in Puerto Vallarta and, of course, the first question on everyone’s mind is, “Why?” That’s easy. Some vendors need more stable and complete facilities to offer their prepared foods and some vendors and customers prefer a location with shade, protected from the elements. Plus, the new Saturday Market Co-op will offer a customer friendly, less congested shopping experience.
With the addition of the Saturday Market Co-op to Puerto Vallarta, the public will now be able to purchase many of the quality products that they are used to in a traditional farmer’s market environment. Two markets mean more choices and more choices mean a higher quality shopping experience.
Since these two markets are within easy walking distance of each other, people are encouraged to shop at both markets for a truly bountiful and pleasurable Saturday morning experience.
