Becas Vallarta School Tours

Becas Vallarta to Showcase Local Schools
Polly G. Vicars – AmericaMexicoFoundation.com

Becas Vallarta School Tours begin Nov 30. Call 223-1371 or email phvicars(at)gmail.com for tickets.

The Becas Vallarta/American-Mexico Foundation this year funds the scholarships of almost 400 local young people eighth grade through university. These scholarships are given to students of great ability and little economic backing who maintain a grade point average of an 8.5 out of a possible 10. We have no office, office equipment or paid staff and all work is done by volunteers with their own supplies and equipment, with almost every peso raised going straight into the scholarships.

becas vallarta school classOur scholarship students attend fourteen junior highs, five senior highs and nine universities ranging all over Puerto Vallarta and its environs.

Some of the junior highs are technical schools offering opportunities for students to learn skills such as sewing, carpentry, electricity, cooking, computing, etc. Some are schools taught almost entirely by television teachers. All teach the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic.

The senior highs are varied in their curriculum with some specializing in the technical and others in college preparation. All are top notch and taught by devoted teachers who do a fantastic job under some really adverse conditions such as overcrowded classrooms and low salaries.

We are fortunate to have so many universities offering a variety of undergraduate degrees. And now CUC, the Puerto Vallarta Branch of the University of Guadalajara, is even offering degrees in medicine!

To see these schools and our students in action on November 30 we are sponsoring a tour of three schools, one junior high – Escuela Secundaria Tecnica #15, Pesquera; one senior high — Ignacio Jacobo; and one university – UNIVA. Tickets are only $500 pesos and include touring on an air conditioned bus and finishing the day with lunch at Los Alcatraces in Fluvial.

Board the buses at the front gate of the Molino de Aqua on Aquiles Serdan in Colonia Emiliano Zapata promptly at 9 am on Wednesday, November 30. For your required advance ticket call or email me at (322) 223-1371 or 044-322-182-0215 or phvicars(at)gmail.com. You may also contact any other member of Becas for your ticket.

A second tour will be on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. This tour will go to Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC) and Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Puerto Vallarta (ITSPV), both universities. The tour will culminate with lunch at the popular restaurant Mariscos El Coleguita in Ixtapa.

PVScene Map

The PVScene is located on the Cuale River on Calle Manantial (mislabeled by Google as “La Rivera” on this map – But, hey, no one ever thought that Google could get everything right).

One nice feature of this map is the street view which shows Sarah standing on our balcony and our old white Toyota pickup parked in front. If you haven’t been here before, I suggest that you turn on the street view feature of the map (put your mouse over the little man in the upper left hand corner of the map and drag him down to near the pointer). The street view helps make confusing directions clear.

ADDRESS:
Manantial 375
Colonia Buenos Aires
Puerto Vallarta.

BUS DIRECTIONS:

The Paso Ancho R-04 bus passes in front of our door for easy access by bus. This bus runs every 20 minutes and is found on the main south-bound city bus route through Centro Vallarta. This route is rather circuitous.

DRIVING OR TAXI DIRECTIONS:

FROM THE NORTH OF VALLARTA, coming south on the Libramiento, turn left at the first stop light after you come out of the big tunel. Follow that road until you begin to see houses (about 1/4 mile down from the light). On your right you will see a large metal walking bridge across the Cuale river. We are the 4th house from the street corner across from that bridge. Park anywhere on this street. It is safe. We are upstairs behind a green metal gate. There are a couple of taco stands on the river bank across the road from us.

FROM THE SOUTH OF VALLARTA on the Libramiento, turn right at the second stop light after the small tunel. Then follow the previous instructions.

It is best not to try to find us by driving through town.
