Arte Contemporáneo, 2008

WEBSITE: Arte Contemporáneo, 2008

May 28 to June 1, 2008.

Arte Contemporaneo is an annual contemporary art festival that brings together international artists to participate in a series of exhibitions, public art projects, panel discussions, and conversations held throughout the beautiful seaside city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Arte Contemporaneo

The organizers of this year’s inaugural festival have invited Los Angeles artists to participate in a cultural dialogue with Mexican artists around the ideas of extended borders, globalization, and hybrid identities—framed within the context of the ever-changing demographics of Puerto Vallarta.

All the participating artists have been included in major museum exhibitions, both in the United States and Mexico, and many have exhibited in the prestigious Whitney Biennial. In addition to painting, works will encompass the contemporary art practices of video, installation, and photography.

For one week every year, cutting edge contemporary art will become the backdrop for the city, transforming its cultural character, and pushing the limits of how we see and define Vallarta. As the festival grows, the hope is that Vallarta will become an inspiration for contemporary artists and that the city becomes a locus for dialogue and creativity.

The exhibition will be held in three different galleries that form three corners of one block, with the fourth corner occupied by the world-renowned Café des Artistes. Public art projects—projected videos—will be exhibited on the malecón and on adjacent buildings, with panel discussions convening in a variety of outdoor arenas and public spaces. Downtown Vallarta will come alive with art—this is one festival that visitors will not want to miss.
