Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center (SETAC) Opens in Puerto Vallarta
by Ed Thomas
The Puerto Vallarta Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Center has officially opened in a quiet area of Old Town. The purpose of the Center, located at Constitucion #427 on the corner of Manuel Dieguez, is to provide essential services to the GLBT community, including support in recovery from alcoholism and other afflictions, physical and mental health treatment and referrals, education and recreation in an atmosphere of safety, free from discrimination.
The Center offers the GLBT community, their families and friends a variety of services meant to improve their physical, emotional and spiritual well being. Creating a network between members of the GLBT and non-GLBT community allows opportunities for members to experience, learn and participate in the mutual development of our common community.
For example, the Center holds AA meetings, English classes, HIV testing and counseling. Condoms are always available by simply asking. There is an HIV support group currently in Spanish, but the Center will be holding an English speaking HIV support group soon. Massages are available currently for people attending the HIV support groups. There is a nutritionist on site Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 1 pm.
In addition, the Center has a referral system for low income people needing medical assistance. Additional services soon to be offered are STD testing, as well as dental and psychological services. Arts and crafts nights, and game nights are meant to bring people together on a lighter note and participate in the fellowship and the joy of belonging to a loving, non-judgmental community.
Movies are shown every Tuesday night at 7:30 pm at the Center. Come and enjoy popcorn and delicious Agua de Jamaica. ALL ARE WELCOME and like with all of our services, this also is free.
