Langostino’s

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Langostino’s is a very comfortable, affordable beach-front bar in the center of the activity on Los Muertos Beach, just a short distance north of the Los Muertos pier. It is set up as half bar and half restaurant. Live music is often offered on weekend nights. You can sit on the beach under palapas or in the restaurant/bar, itself. Langostino’s was sold in 2010 and is now Canadian owned. Nice.

La Revolucion Sports Bar

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Revolution is a popular theme in Mexico and La Revolucion has been a restaurant/bar in its present location for over 30 years. Of course, the current owner’s incarnation is only 2009, but the name remains the same, with the addition of this now being a “sports bar.” A revolutionary sports bar….

The full bar is also a restaurant with very reasonable prices (at least for breakfast) and decent food. There are indoor and outdoor seating areas and all are comfortable and pleasant. Large screen TVs adorn the walls. If you go there to drink, botanas (snacks beyond pretzels and peanuts) are served, a Mexican bar tradition which, for all practical purposes, no longer exists in tourist Vallarta.

This is a popular early meeting/drinking place for locals who work in the surrounding stores and government offices. Tony Colin, the owner, has several restaurants/bars in Vallarta and is well known in certain circles.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • HOURS/DAYS: 8 am to 10 pm, Closed Sundays
  • HAPPY HOUR: None. Beer 18 pesos, mixed drinks 35 pesos, margaritas 45 pesos. Wine is around 40 pesos a glass with bottles 150 to 300 pesos. Specials sometimes.
  • FOOD:
    • Breakfasts are very inexpensive from 25 to 45 pesos, including coffee. Lunch is moderately priced at 50 to 70 pesos for what I would call “bar food,” Hamburgers, wings, etc. Dinner is 80 to 130 pesos for standard Mexican fare.
  • EXTRAS:
    • Botanas
    • Large TVs
    • Free Wifi

Los Equipales

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Los Equipales de Tony Colin Restaurant Bar is a small place just off the main roads a block from the Puerto Vallarta Presidencia Plaza. Los equipales is the name of the local style of furniture made with wood and cowhide and, of course, the furnishings of the bar reflect this. This bar is owned by local entrepreneur, Tony Colin, who also owns La Revolución bar nearby and who has previously owned several other bars in Vallarta. The food served is simple and inexpensive and mostly fish and mariscos, with a hamburger and chicken breast thrown into the menu for those who don’t like fish. It was started early in 2010.

Barra 17

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Barra 17 opened in April 2010. It is in a long, narrow storefront on Juarez, the main street leading out of downtown Centro and it’s about a block from the Presidencia. It’s very modern and upscale but with equipale along with techno furniture. There is a very long wooden bar facing two large TVs and 6-8 tables along the wall.

The owner says that “This is a bar, not a cantina” when asked about his somewhat high prices for some drinks. In the morning and afternoon, up to about 6 pm, Barra 17 more of a restaurant than a bar with comida corrida at 50 pesos and assorted fish dishes up to 95 pesos. Breakfast is generally 20 to 40 pesos for traditional Mexican dishes.

The atmosphere is modern with blue lights and mirrors, contrasting slightly with the equiplale table furniture.

The Puerto Vallarta Cantinas

gloria y infiernaOriginally cantinas were Italian wine cellars but as the concept migrated to Mexico, they first appeared as upper class Spanish wine bars but soon merged with lower class pulquerias into havens exclusively for men until 1982, when the law banning women from entering cantinas was lifted. This law may be gone but the attitude remains; single men in cantinas are hungry.

The cantinas we cover here in Puerto Vallarta in this Bar Guide are mostly tame by traditional Mexican standards. That is, of course, unless you stumble into one late, late at night on a bad, bad moon. A lonely gringo in a cantina can be a sad sight.

Some cantinas are still bastions of machismo, the working class man’s “men’s clubs,” with the only females in sight working women. Furnishings are sparse with a few wooden or plastic tables, a jukebox and a small bar serving the basics. There are some gringo bars in Vallarta calling themselves “cantinas” and playing on the concept but they will be listed separately.
