“The Foolish are not Going to Heaven” » New Jalisco State-Sponsored Soap Opera

There is a controversy brewing in the Government over a proposed TeleNovela (TV Soap Opera), sponsored by the State Government, to promote tourism in Jalisco.

(with apologies for the loose translation…)
Following remarks that have been made against the State Government sponsorship to make a soap opera for Televisa, the Governor of Jalisco, Emilio Gonzalez Marquez, has defended its right to promote tourism to the state through “The foolish are not going to heaven.” Once again the governor reiterated that the sponsorship will only be in kind with an approximate value of 12 million pesos. Likewise he reiterated that television production will serve as a means of promoting the State and some of its productive activities such as crafts and jewelry. With regard to these statements, the deputy of the PRD, Carlos Orozco Santillan, recalled that “while it is true that this is not the first time that a state government used public resources to promote soap operas or programs involved with the alleged or hypothetical promotion of a tourist destination,” the members of his party believe that public resources are needed in other areas rather than to encourage governments to promote the the city or state.
