Puerto Vallarta Bullfights » Wednesdays, Dec 23, 2009, to May, 2010

Corrida de Toros

“Anything capable of arousing passion in its favor will surely raise as much passion against it.” – Ernest Hemingway

The 2009-2010 Puerto Vallarta Bullfighting season will run from December 23 thru May at la Plaza de Toros “La Paloma” on the airport highway just north of Walmart and the Marina. Bullfights are held weekly, every Wednesday, at 5pm. The cost is 350 pesos.

There is blood and death for the bulls (4 a night), posing and pageantry for the toreadors. Bullfighting can be poetry and art and it can be primitive man against animal brutality. The bullfight is one notable place where cultures clash between New World sentimentality and European/Mexican sensuality.

Perhaps it would be good to take into account that this is one of the main “premiums” offered by timeshare salesmen here in Puerto Vallarta so much of the audience will probably be tourists. The Vallarta Bullfights are not premium.

VII Campeonato Nacional Charro » February 18 to 22, 2009

The Puerto Vallarta yearly traditional Championship Mexican Charreada (Rodeo) will be held February 18 to 22, 2009. If you like charros (cowboys) and horses and pageantry, this is a very exciting event.

THE MALECONEADA:

A special highlight open to everyone without charge will be on Friday, February 20, at 10 pm, the traditional Maleconeada, a promenade on the Malecón with many Charros, chicas, walking bands and free tequila being passed out to all those attending. The Maleconeada begins late in the evening and continues on until it’s over. It starts at the north end of the Malecón at Park Hidalgo and proceeds down to the Presidencia where it ends with a public dance. The march is slow and the people are “happy” and loose.

Blessing of the Animals, St. Anthony’s Day » January 17

On Saturday, Januarty 17th at 11:45 am, all people are invited to bring their household animals to Puerto del Cielo, the chapel of Hacienda San Angel, at Miramar 363, Colonia El Cerro, Downtown Puerto Vallarta.

This event is Free and Open to the Public. Refreshments will be available.

Animals (household pets only) will be blessed by Esteban Salazar Gonzalez, Parroco

This event is sponsored by SPCA de PV

St. Anthony Abbot, much venerated throughout Italy, is a hermit-saint who died in the deserts of Egypt on January 17th in the fourth century (not to be confused with St. Anthony of Padua, a Franciscan saint of the thirteenth century). Legend has it that during his periods of prayer and fasting in the desert, his only companions were the animals. Occasionally, the local people brought him bread. An integral part of St. Anthony’s feast day, even today, is the blessing of the animals followed by the receiving of the pane benedetto (“blessed bread”). Like most feast days in Italy, the Feast of St. Anthony is intertwined with the ancient Roman world. The long period between the winter solstice and summer equinox was replete with festivities and rites of purification, of the animals, the fields, the people – propitious offerings for fertility and regeneration of the cosmos. Today, under the veil of religious feast days, local customs are tied to those ancient rites of fecundity and regeneration. The blessing of domestic animals on the Feast of St. Anthony was considered auspicious, keeping away evil forces from the home and land, bringing fertility, fecundity.

The mission of SPCA de PV is to help fund and promote sterilization,
adoption and healthcare efforts for companion animals in the Puerto
Vallarta area, with the goal of eliminating the euthanasia of
healthy and adoptable animals. Monies raised will support these
various goals in ways that are most feasible within the community.
