Spencer Tunick Returns to Mexico » January 19, 2009

Spencer Tunick, the U.S. photographer famed for shooting photos of naked people en masse in public places, returned to Mexico City over the weekend to do his thing again.

The last time the photographer worked in Mexico, he photographed an estimated 20,000 people naked in the city’s Zocalo, or grand central plaza, in May 2007.

This time around, Tunick opted for more intimate portraits of people posed naked around the streets of Mexico City and spent the weekend and yesterday snapping 40 subjects (men and women) in locations as diverse as newsstands, a water truck and the Latin America Tower in the historic center of the city.

Supported by National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the project was apparently inspired by the collection of works by Andrés Blaisten (a 20th century Mexican artist) presented in the Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco.

Tunick said that he feels safer working in Mexico City than he does in the United States, according to local media.

“I feel more secure here in Mexico because I couldn’t do this project in Texas, where I’ve been imprisoned,” he said to El Universal.

Puerto Vallarta 2009 Mardi Gras Carnaval Parade » February 21

THE DAY AFTER: PVScene, along with its sister webstite, VallartaScene, and Casa Isabel was in this parade and it is by far the best parade Vallarta has ever seen. I hope it continues as a tradition. 1000s of people lined the parade route. Hundreds of people participated. Photos to follow…

There will be a parade celebrating Carnaval Puerto Vallarta 2009, on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 10 pm. The parade will start and end at Club Mañana and move along Venustiano Carranza, Olas Altas, Pulito and Lázaro Cardenas.

We urge all legitimate organizations and businesses to participate in what we hope will be an annual Puerto Vallarta event. Already we have several participants from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

The theme of the parade will be “Celebration of Life” and participants should theme their entry. This is going to be a great event!!! Pre-registration is required and a small fee will be charged; the fee for non-profits is waived. For registration or information: USE THIS FORM

Possible parade entries include cars, floats, people holding banners, and marching bands etc. Although it is anticipated that most of the entries will be gay related, the parade is open to any legitimate organization that wants to participate. The entry fee of $250 pesos will be charged to cover administration costs and to ensure the integrity of the parade. This fee is waived for non-profit organizations.

Club Mañana is hosting the greatest Carnaval and Mardi Gras parties Puerto Vallarta has ever seen – for four nights beginning Saturday February 21 and ending on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) February 24, 2009

The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema

MOVIE OF THE WEEK:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-n9f-mGLT4

THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA takes the viewer on an exhilarating ride through some of the greatest movies ever made. Serving as presenter and guide is the charismatic Slavoj Zizek, the Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst. With his engaging and passionate approach to thinking, Zizek delves into the hidden language of cinema, uncovering what movies can tell us about ourselves.

THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA offers an introduction into some of Zizek’s most exciting ideas on fantasy, reality, sexuality, subjectivity, desire, materiality and cinematic form. Whether he is untangling the famously baffling films of David Lynch, or overturning everything you thought you knew about Hitchcock, Zizek illuminates the screen with his passion, intellect, and unfailing sense of humour. THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA applies Zizek’s ideas to the cinematic canon, in what The Times calls “an extraordinary reassessment of cinema.”

The film cuts its cloth from the very world of the movies it discusses; by shooting at original locations and on replica sets, it creates the uncanny illusion that Zizek is speaking from within the films themselves. Described by The Times as “the woman helming this Freudian inquest,” director Sophie Fiennes’ collaboration with Slavoj Zizek illustrates the immediacy with which film and television can communicate genuinely complex ideas. Says Zizek: “My big obsession is to make things clear. I can really explain a line of thought if I can somehow illustrate it in a scene from a film. THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA is really about what psychoanalysis can tell us about cinema.”

THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA is constructed in three parts. Says Fiennes: “The form of the Guide is a deliberately open one. There are three parts, but there could be more. Zizek’s method of thinking is exciting because it’s always building. Things relate forwards and backwards and interconnect into a mind-altering network of ideas. The film’s title is something of a McGuffin – just a way to get you into this network.”
