3rd Encuentro Internacional de Medicina Natural y Alternativa » January 30 to February 15

From January 30 to February 15 in Lázaro Cárdenas Park, the 3rd Encuentro Internacional de Medicina Natural y Alternativa (Third Edition of the International Meeting on Natural and Alternative Medicine), featuring local and International specialists from various natural disciplines will take place.

When you first walk into this show, you might think, “Oh, no, just another schlocky tourist trap.” Don’t be fooled by this first reaction. There are treasures here, both in knowledge and experience. Talk to the vendors. Skip the ones with the hype and the plastic trinkets (although some of the “trinket” booths have much more than “trinkets”). Concentrate on the ones who have something real to say. The purpose is to learn, to encounter. In the “traditional medicine” realm, there is pomada peyote, damiana, pomada marijuana, coco leaves, coffee bean necklaces, eagle-claw rattles….

Five workshops will be conducted including:

  • El de Reiki (Reiki)
  • Cristales y Cuarzos (Crystals and Quartz)
  • Yoga, que será impartido por una especialista cubana (Yoga, taught by a Cuban specialist)
  • Numerología (Numerology)
  • Herbolaria (herbalism)

Workshops that will cost an average of 300 pesos each, except those that are commercial, which will cost 2000 pesos.

There will be dance performances and experts in massage, acupuncture with the demonstration and sale of spiritual and natural products.

The Malecon Sculpture Tour

“Free” doesn’t often translate into “good,” especially for those who subscribe to the theory that “You get what you pay for.” But in this case, the Tuesday morning Malecón sculpture tour by Gary Thompson of Galeria Pacifico, “free” is great.

Gary ThompsonEvery Tuesday at 9:30 am (from November 8, 2011, to April 17, 2012) Gary shows up at the Millennia Sculpture at the north end of the Malecón, just seaside of the Rosita Hotel and begins a two hour walking tour of the assorted bronze sculptures along this Vallarta beach.

There is absolutely no cost for this tour although Gary does occasionally suggest that people tip the sand sculptors and sky guys along the way. The walk isn’t hard, but it’s long and if the weather is hot, it’s a bit strenuous for the slower among us. Gary is quick and sharp, knowledgeable and humorous. He has lived in Vallarta for over 30 years and has run the Galeria Pacifico on Aldama in Centro for 20+ years.

Art WalkGary Thompson has been hosting this tour for three years. It had originally been conceived of as a tour of artists’ studios, but that concept fell by the wayside as quickly as the artists forgot the dates of the tour and drowsily and in their pajamas greeted the tourists that Gary had in tow.

The talk/tour starts off with artist Mathis Lidice (real name, Fernando Baños) describing and discussing for about 15 minutes his massive landmark Millennia sculpture. Then the trek begins.

Each main sculpture on the Malecón is discussed as the tour stops before it, either by Gary or his volunteer assistant, Cathy Morrow. Even the InfoArte computers with bronzes atop are given passing mention. Gary’s method is relaxed and humorous and he provides many background details no guide book could possibly include. Gossip and scandal and human interest intersect at each stop. He discusses the artists as much or more than the sculptures, as he should, since their souls are the life blood of the cast metal.

There is ample time for audience questions and the group spends about 5 minutes on each subject. You’ll hear how most of the artists financed their projects with donations and how drunks climb and fall off the Sergio Bustamante ladder sculpture, “In Search of the Reason” (not a recommended activity – drunkenly climbing the ladder, that is, not the search for reason).

You’ll learn of artists’ love affairs and the political intrigues surrounding some of the pieces and the protests at their installations: “Bare breasts on the Beach!?!”

But more, you will learn of the men who created these sometimes massive metal objects, and why.

For anyone who has any interest in art or Puerto Vallarta history and culture, this tour is much more than ideal. It’s more than an introduction and more than a tour. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Tuesday morning.

To take this tour no reservations are necessary. Just show up at 9:30 am Tuesday at the Millennia Sculpture on the Malecón. I wouldn’t advise bringing children (you know how they are…) and if you have trouble walking long distances, the walk may be a challenge, but it will be a challenge that you won’t forget.

On Tuesdays, Slade has brought back Alex Ryder to do her hit show “Pure Piaf.” Alex will also be presenting a new show, “This Could be the Start of Something,” which is a tribute to Steve and Edie, who individually were award-winning stars, and together brought new heights of quality performance to the stage. “Something” will be on our stage on Wednesdays for the first 3 weeks of February.

Gib Hauersperger Benefit at PJ’s Comedy Club » January 31

Giving the Gift of Laughter

At P.J.’s Comedy Club at The San Franciscan Resort

Not often is one afforded the opportunity to split a gut laughing so hard it hurts while simultaneously helping someone truly in need. Just such a chance is being offered Saturday January 31, 2009 by P.J. Ensminger owner of Vallarta’s new Comedy Club located in the San Franciscan Resort.

“Gib Hauersperger has been a wonderful friend to so many people here in Puerto Vallarta, this is a fantastic opportunity for us to help him in a way that will really make a difference – and laugh while doing so.” Said PJ.

Gib, who has been undergoing very expensive treatment for cancer, has been a resident of Puerto Vallarta for over six years. He has assisted countless people from his various concierge desks during his time living here and continues to do so now at Blue Seas Beach Club. His contributions to Vallarta, and to the Gay community here, are innumerable.

The show begins at 8:00PM at P.J.’s Comedy Club located in the San Franciscan Resort at 213 Calle Pilitas, just east of Olas Altas in Vallarta’s Romantic Zone. There will be plenty to drink and lots of delicious Mexican snacks (botanas) provided by Hotel Casa Cupula who is co-hosting the event with the Comedy Club.

Gib Hauersperger benefit
