LOS BAMBINOS ARE BACK!

By Ann Marie Danimus

The Bambinos entertain on Mondays for the season. The boys have a wonderful ear for harmony as they perform a selection of hits from the Beach Boys and the Beatles to a variety of Mexican standards. Yoga with Mikki Prost will run every day through Sat at 9 am. “Worship in Paradise” every Sunday with Pastor Ric at 9am.

THE SHOWS:

  • “Los Bambinos” on Mondays will feature two acts beginning with a medley of familiar Spanish songs, followed by several original compositions, both in English and Spanish. The second act will be a history of pop with covers of the Everly Brothers, the Beach Boys, the Beatles and the Eagles. Their CD “IMAGINAR” will be on sale after the show with songs written and performed by Los Bambinos in their new image as Metamorsa
  • “FEVER” Mikki Prost returns on Tuesday night with an Encore version of her hit show of last season, this time with her favorite choreographer and dance partner, Ian. “Fever” brings forward some of the favorites and includes many new numbers, both in the form of vocals and as dance routines.
  • “Always, Patsy Cline” is back after 23 consecutive sold-out performances. It tells the story of Patsy Cline and her friend and fan Louise and is not to be missed. Sandi Lee stars as Patsy and brilliantly performs her hits and some lesser-known songs. Mikki Prost both brings the audience to hysterics and tears as the spunky Louise.
  • Be sure not to miss Bailando! a latin dance extravaganza playing Thursday night at eight PM. From Tango to Salsa to Merengue and back, these talented performers do not disappoint with colorful costumes and great moves. Bailando! is one of many spectacular shows performed by the group which have been seen in many hotels, clubs and special events before coming to the Santa Barbara Theater. The group is directed by Angel Stopier who also performs in our “Fever”. Angel worked in television for 12 years with Televisa in Monterey, choreographed for Sesame Street and danced with International singers Paulina Rubio, Veronica Castro & Lucia Mendez.
  • Direct from Key West Florida, RV Beaumont recently flew into Vallarta for special holiday performances of her popular show. This upbeat and fast paced production features tastefully completed on stage costume changes, a variety of music, adult themes and hilarious improv interaction with the audience. This continually evolving show has different elements in each performance, to make it fresh and enjoyable not only for RV herself, but for people who had so much fun the first time they see the show, that they want to return again. Expect fun costumes, big hair and lots of laughs. The RV Beaumont Show will run December 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 and January 1 – 3.
  • Pearlene Dubois will be our new “Queen of the Month” in our quest to bring all of the funniest drag queen comedians down to PV to entertain. Our Joey is helping us to book in these acts and is great friends with Pearlene and he has told me about her love of all things Vienese…well, sausages at least.

So when you come down for laughs bring a can. In fact, If you bring in a healthy donation (more than 3 items) I will knock 20 pesos off the price of your ticket. Now that is what I call a triple threat! A discount, a charitable donation and a night of laughter. And you will laugh; look her up on you tube for a taste. Miss Dubois runs from the eighth to the 31st of January.

  • Liza MANelli. The team that brought you “Bob Fosse and all that dance” brings their first drag show to life with Paul Guerrero starring as Liza. Accompanied by four energetic and talented back-up dancers, the show takes you on a roller coaster ride through the greatest hits of Liza Manelli. With a distinct style and impeccable taste Paul brings this American icon to life in a fun and exciting way yet to be seen. Coupled with the great choreography we have come to know and love from Freddy and Paul to songs such as “New York, New York”, “Some People”, “Where is the Love” and “City Lights” the audience will find a delightful, sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, but always entertaining show. Be sure to watch for the special guests and remember, “life is a cabaret, my friend.”
  • “Bums on Broadway” features fabulous numbers from famous Broadway musicals including “Smokey Joe’s Café,” “Hairspray,” “Godspell,” “The Color Purple” and “Chicago,” just to name a few. “Bums on Broadway” is so captivating we dare you not to jump out of your seat and join the cast in their musical celebration.

Box office is open Mon-Sat from 11 am to 7 pm. Call for reservations at 223-2048 and be sure to check out new web site at www.santabarbaratheater.com.

Jazz Concert Wednesday, Nov 19, at CyCs

by Steve York

The group Faralae from Mexico City will perform on Wednesday, November 19 at CyCs on Los Muertos Beach. They play gypsy jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt. Three of the four members, two guitarists and a female vocalist, are in PV on vacation. They played at CyC recently and I filled in for their bass player. They are all extremely talented and a lot of fun.

Also, the concert is scheduled for Wednesday as some of the musicians from the Carnival cruise may attend and play, providing they are allowed to bring their instruments ashore.

Some of Puerto Vallarta’s outstanding local musicians will help Cuates y Cuetes celebrate this 15th anniversary with the jazz concert from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. inside of the restaurant. Performers include Martin Montenegro, Paco Barajas, Memo Suarez, Steve York and Lisa York, along with the Mexico City group, Faralae.

Vallarta Chamber Orchestra Presents Christmas Concert December 14

Vallarta Chamber Orchestra Presents Christmas Concert December 14

by Mary MacLachlan

Puerto Vallarta will be treated to an amazing evening of Christmas music on December 14th. The concert will feature the Vallarta Chamber Choir as well as the brilliant local pianist Joseph Gomez.

Mr. Gomez will be performing the last movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto #23 during the first half of the evening and then he and the orchestra will be joined by the Vallarta Chamber Choir to perform a beautiful selection of spectacular Christmas music for the second half.

This evening will prove to be the perfect way to begin your Christmas celebrations so bring your family and friends for this very special seasonal event.

The four-year-old orchestra consists of twenty very talented musicians. The musicians have a variety of musical backgrounds and come from Mexico, Canada, England, Cuba and the US.

The concert, conducted by Mr. Nick Salmans, will take place at the Colegio Americana (American School) which is located near the Plaza Marina. Admission is by donation at the door with all proceeds going towards the ongoing costs of the orchestra. There is plenty of parking available.

Biblioteca de La Higuera Annual Fundraiser

Very Sadly, Sally Conely died of a heart attack this morning, December 1, 2008. She will be dearly missed.

Biblioteca de La Higuera Annual Fundraiser
Calle Hidalgo #256 – El Pitillal
Monday, November 24, 2008, 6pm to 9pm

Tickets: 250 pesos includes two drinks (wine or soft drinks), food plate, two raffle tickets (and we have some fabulous raffle prizes!)
Music by D’Rachel

Yes! It’s that time of year again – the event that “kicks off” the high season as we gather to raise funds for Sally Conley’s little library in El Pitillal. Sally’s life has been dedicated to books, reading and teaching these joys to children.

Tucked away behind a giant higuera (rubber) tree, once you enter this magical world filled with pint-sized chairs, colorful paintings and craftworks made by the kids, you are immediately whisked back to your childhood days of finding that very special book in the library and entering your own private world.

Keeping the library up, running and growing is an ongoing financial struggle. This is the 4th annual fundraiser with all previous events being a great success with lots of fun and surprises!
As last year, we will have resplendent gift baskets for sale for your holiday shopping needs, economically priced and filled with amazing goodies!

The Day After Dia de los Muertos

Aqui la eternidad empieza y es polvo aqui la mundanal grandeza. (Here the eternity begins and the worldly grandeur is dust.)

A photo essay: The Day After Dia de Los Muertos
5 Diciembre Pantheon (cemetery) in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, November 3, 2008
by Sarah Hepting

Sarah’s PhotoBlog: Vallarta Voyeur

I spent about 8 hours putting this show together and by the end of it, my head was bursting with images and words.

I have always loved cemeteries. When I was young, I was a very restless person, always uncomfortable and in turmoil. For several years I traveled a lot, and I frequently camped out in cemeteries. They were peaceful places for the lonely, accepting of sadness, and no one ever told me I didn’t belong there. I got to know many dead people’s stories in few words. In death, there were no expectations, no demands, and a silent companion was always welcome.

In Mexico, there is a day for those who are dead. I do not understand that some cultures do not embrace this bridge that we all must cross. Why cultures do not try to connect it to the world we live in is destructive. For we also die in this world. To hold this close only makes living that much more precious, and to connect ourselves to the grief and euphoria that is the dance of the living with the dead is a freedom, a peace, that we all need in order to move through our days with courage.

We are all alone, disconnected, but even as the stones crack with time, and our names wither with the motion of the newly living, there is a grace to this naked beauty we call life, which can only be viewed when the shadows of death offer that softening contrast.

It takes courage to celebrate with the rawbone face of a skeleton, and the Mexican people have my respect for grasping this so eloquently.
